How hard is it to find an apartment in Beijing? Got Scammed Apartment hunting in Beijing is no joke. Rent is expensive, listings can be misleading, and finding a decent place takes a lot of time and energy. We were told one apartment had a shared bathroom for only 2 people, but when we got there, it was actually shared by 3 or 4 rooms. At one point, we were so tired and frustrated that we even spent a night sleeping in a tent instead of booking a hotel. After all that searching, we finally found a place for 2700 RMB per month with a private bathroom and a shared kitchen. This was our real experience trying to find an apartment in Beijing. Renting tips in Beijing • Never trust the listing only. Photos and descriptions can be very misleading. • Ask exactly how many people share the bathroom and kitchen. Do not accept vague answers. • Visit the place in person before paying anything. • Check the neighborhood too. Look at transport, food, noise, and safety. • Confirm all costs first. Ask about rent, deposit, agency fee, utilities, and management fees. • Read the contract carefully. Make sure the rent, payment date, and refund terms are clear. • Be careful with cheap rooms. If the price looks too good for Beijing, there is usually a catch. • Prepare for a long search.
