In the Batak tradition, the ideal marriage is when a man marries a woman who has the same surname as his mother. This song, written in the form of a pantun, is about the uneasy feeling a man experiences when he has to obey his mother's wishes to find a lover with same surname as her. He is unable to freely choose who he can love. In the Batak language, the mood of a pantun is always cheerful even if it is about something sad.
