The early 90s was a truly special time for Square Enix, known back then internationally as SquareSoft. They had helped to truly define and establish the JRPG genre with Dragon Quest and then Final Fantasy, with both franchises releasing multiple games by 1995 and producing some of the greatest gaming experiences the world had ever seen. One can certainly argue that they are rival franchises, similar in many ways while differing in others, different visions and interpretations of the genre that have been adored by millions. Rivals don't usually come together, and when they do, something special happens. While that is a documentary in and of itself, the result was that a plan that brought together the minds of pioneers like Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, the late, great Akira Toriyama and many, many more that JRPG fans will know and respect from their adventures. In this day and age, it feels almost impossible, like Rockstar Collaborating with CDPR to work on a new open world game together or something. But back then, with them all working at the same company, such a collaboration was possible and the fruit that came from that dream team was, Chrono Trigger. It's known, respected and loved by many gamers around the world, no conversation or list about JRPGs is complete without mentioning this iconic title. A once in a lifetime collaboration that lived up to its hype and list of names in the credits. I've known about this title for well over a decade, but as a latecomer to JRPGs in general and being so focused on playing through the Final Fantasy catalogue, I'd never had the chance to try this one out. Now that I've completed all the mainline single player FFs and dipped my toes into Dragon Quest, I have a better understanding of how the genre evolved in the late 80s and early 90s, and a greater appreciation of these geniuses at work. There's still plenty for me to explore and learn about JRPGs, and Chrono Trigger is a core part of that education, so I'm very excited to finally give this one a go. I held out for years in the hope that it might get a nice remake or significant remaster. That has not happened as of 2026, so I'm launchin' with my first playthrough. In the past, remakes have been announced for games I've held off on during the series, maybe this one will continue that trend :) In this first part I begin the story, with our main protagonist, Crono, exploring his local town, where a fair is taking place. It's all fun and games, a contrast to some titles of this type that immediately begin with the doomsday scenario. Before long however, things of course take a turn for the unusual when an experimental device that should be teleporting people produces an unexpected result. Marle, our new friend goes missing after stepping into the machine as a volunteer, and it is up to us to find her. Chrono Trigger is an old school JRPG that feels very familiar thanks to its era, style and creative minds behind it. But at the same time, it brings its own innovations and ideas, in a fun, engaging story taking us through millions of years of history, testing our resolve and character, while of course challenging us to complete our quest to save the world. As always, this is a first time, blind run of the game. I know nothing about the characters, story, gameplay or secrets. I'll be making mistakes, missing things, misunderstanding dialogue and plot points, all things many of you did on your 1st ever runs back in the day.
