GH¢22 BILLION LOST ON GOLD — OR IS THE STORY MORE COMPLICATED? Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme has triggered a major political and economic controversy. The IMF says the programme generated losses of about GH¢22 billion (US$1.7 billion), equivalent to 1.5% of GDP, in 2025. But GoldBod’s audited 2025 financial statements report an overall surplus of GH¢5.44 billion and an operational surplus of about GH¢909.7 million. So what is actually happening? This video examines the critical distinction between the Bank of Ghana’s losses under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and GoldBod’s own audited financial performance. The IMF also acknowledged that the gold programme helped strengthen Ghana’s international reserves and reduce pressure on the foreign-exchange market. At the same time, it warned that the programme weakened the Bank of Ghana’s balance sheet.
