Step 1: Why Do Classmates Who Study Less Score Better?
I have coached USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK, and USMLE Step 3 students for over a decade. I went to Stanford Medical School, scored top 0.1% on Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and trained in anesthesia at Harvard. The medical student in this clip just finished his dedicated study period, and his last practice test was a 50%, after a 35, a 45 and a 51. He wants two scores of 68% or higher before he takes Step 1, and he told me he had been doing about 1,500 Anki reviews a day without retaining much.
Most medical students assume that the classmates who study less and still score better are simply smarter. If you are a student putting in huge hours for Step 1 and stalling, the problem is not intelligence. It is aim, because the students who improve fastest know exactly which few things keep costing them questions and spend their time there instead of on what they already know. Make targeted cards on those gaps, and you get far more out of the hours you already study.
