Exterminators charge $400 for squirrels. My Japanese mother never paid one yen. In 1970 I came from Osaka to America, planted 12 tomato plants, and a gray squirrel took one bite out of every single one. I wrote to my mother. Two weeks later her answer came on thin blue airmail paper: three pantry items, and one last line I did not understand for many years.
In this video I show you exactly what she did, how much, and where: red chili (togarashi), plain dish soap, and peppermint (hakka). No poison, no traps, no man with a truck. And at the end, the last step almost nobody does, the one that keeps them from coming back every year.
What you will learn:
Why squirrels dig up your bulbs and move into your attic (it is the calendar, not the animal)
How to tell a squirrel from mice, rats or a raccoon just by listening to the clock
The chili spray recipe: 1 quart of water, 2 tablespoons of red pepper flakes (or 1 tablespoon of ground cayenne), simmered 15 minutes, rested overnight, strained through a coffee filter
Why birds feel nothing from chili, so your cardinals and chickadees keep eating
The surprise ingredient: 1 teaspoon of plain dish soap, the glue that keeps the chili on the leaf
Bulbs dusted red in a paper bag, a thin chili line, and chicken wire laid flat
Bird seed with oil and cayenne that squirrels leave alone
Peppermint oil on cotton balls for the attic, and when NOT to use it (babies, cats)
Daffodils and alliums as a fence of guards, a water dish, and picking tomatoes at the first pink
How to find the door on your roof, wait for the babies, use a one-way door, and seal it with hardware cloth
5 mistakes that keep squirrels coming back, and the two things my mother never did
The whole year, season by season, and the full list to write down

Safety: wear gloves with chili, never spray toward your eyes, keep the bottle away from children and pets, and wash vegetables before you eat them. If a branch or a hole is high, ask a young neighbor to hold the ladder. Please, at our age, never climb alone.
Thank you for sitting with me in my garden. Take care of your garden, and close the door last.
