Most joints in a steel building are held together with just a few bolts. So how does the whole thing stand up? In this video we follow the weight of a building, piece by piece, from the roof all the way down to the soil. You'll see what a building actually carries, how a floor passes its load to the beams, why steel beams are shaped like an I, how a simple bolted joint works, why columns buckle, how bracing stops the wind, and how foundations spread the load into the ground. By the end, you'll be able to look at any steel building and see how it works. Chapters 0:00 Intro 0:35 What is a building carrying? 1:34 The floor 2:30 Beams: why the I shape 4:06 Connections 5:06 Columns and buckling 6:17 Wind and bracing 7:39 Foundations 8:38 The whole journey 9:18 Look again What you'll learn Load, imposed (live) load and wind: down, and sideways Composite floors: concrete poured on a thin ribbed steel deck The load path: slab → secondary beam → primary beam → column → foundation Why an I-beam is about 39 times stiffer than a solid square bar of the same steel Section names in the UK (universal beams), the USA (W shapes) and Europe (IPE) Simple fin-plate joints, shear, and why a frame of simple joints needs bracing Buckling, splices, base plates, holding-down bolts, pad foundations and piles Notes All dimensions shown are illustrations, not design values. Section sizes: UK universal beams and columns (BS 4-1), US W shapes (AISC Shapes Database), European IPE sections (EN 10365); the three sections compared are similar sizes, not exact equivalents. Composite floor detail after SCI P300 guidance; fin plate and column base details follow general UK practice (SCI P358 and steelconstruction.info guidance). Every plate, hole and bolt in a steel building is drawn by a steel detailer first. That's what this channel is about. Subscribe for more.
