Rescue video: The full restoration of a 1975 Yamaha SB 55 Bass. This is the most comprehensive rescue I have taken on... and it's taken over a year to get this ready for sale. Meet Spade Head! The 1975 Yamaha SB55 bass that someone had thrashed and decided to cover in black house paint. There is plenty of before and after footage of this vintage Yamaha Bass, including time lapse footage and lots of tips on how to (and how not to) restore a badd - how to refinish with Tru-oil and even how to refret. Script transcription Spade head started life in 1975 as a Yamaha SB55. I have a real soft spot for SB55s, for a number of reasons. The model was one of Yamaha’s first successful basses. It was a massive turning point for them. Design and the tone is Somewhere between a Jazz Bass and a P Bass The double cutaway body shape was a quantum leap in design.. It was beautiful. Especially compared with the odd looking SB2A… known to many as the “flying samurai” Or SB 1 C - the flying Banana. The headstock isn’t everyone’s cup of tea… there’s a reason I call these things spade heads. The spade headed SB models ran for a few years in 1973-1976 It’s the precursor to arguably one of the greatest basses of all time the SuperBass. Look at the natural finished SB400… it’s almost like Yamaha wanted to trial the body shape before committing designers to the headstock. I had an SB55 a while ago and loved it. The tone, the neck profile and the quality nearly 50 years on… just amazing. So when I saw this poor thing on the auctions I knew I had to rescue it.
