Rachel Apa Died 2 Miles From the NYC Marathon Finish Line

Rachel Apa was 24 years old and running her first marathon. On Sunday, 1 November 2026, at around 1:30 p.m., she collapsed near Mile 24 of the TCS New York City Marathon in Central Park, about two miles from the finish line. Spectators, including two doctors, gave her CPR until race medics arrived with a defibrillator, and she was taken to Mount Sinai, where doctors worked for about six hours. She was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m., her father told The New York Times. In this documentary we tell her story: the Bucknell University field hockey player who was studying for an MBA, who ran as a Parkinson's Foundation Champion in memory of her grandfather, whose mother filmed her smiling at Mile 14 in Queens, and who texted her father "final stretch" at Mile 23.
