What if you don’t have to pretend you’re okay with your child’s choices in order to stay close to them?
Maybe your adult child has left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is questioning their faith, living with a partner, making choices you don’t understand, or simply living a life that looks very different from the one you pictured for them.
You love them.
And some of it is still hard for you.
Both can be true.
In Episode 39, Love Doesn’t Require You to Pretend Everything Is Okay, we’re talking about what it looks like to tell the truth in a way that creates connection instead of using honesty to try to change your child.
There’s a big difference between:
“This is hard for me.”
and:
“You’re making my life hard.”
One takes responsibility for your feelings. The other puts those feelings in your child’s hands.
We’ll talk about people-pleasing, tiptoeing around difficult conversations, and the fear that being honest will push your child away. I’ll also share ideas from Brooke Castillo, Jody Moore, Brené Brown, and scriptures that have helped me think differently about truth, love, and connection.
And then we’re taking this conversation one step further.
Because telling the truth isn’t only about creating a better relationship with your child.
It can free YOU too.
When you stop pretending, monitoring your child, managing everyone’s reactions, and waiting for your child’s life to change before you can be okay, you get some of your own life back.
Your child gets to have their life, you get to love them and you get to be honest about what’s hard.
You can find joy, make plans, laugh, dream, and create a life you’re excited to live.
Your joy is not a betrayal of your concern for your child.
If you’re an LDS mom struggling with choices your teen or adult child is making, this is exactly the work I help moms with.
