IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina 2026: When Mother Nature Fought Back!

This wasn’t just a race, it was a battle against the elements from start to finish. Cold rain, brutal winds, and a dark, choppy swim transformed Wilmington into an unforgettable endurance test. On the bike, 20+ mph headwinds and dangerous bridge grates forced athletes to slow down and walk for safety. Then came the run, with more rain, relentless wind, and temperatures plunging from 73 to 55 degrees. With reports of more than 500 DNFs, this race proved to me that triathlon is about far more than speed. It’s about resilience, adaptability, courage, and the determination to keep moving forward when conditions turn against you. I want to congratulate every athlete who started, persevered, and crossed the finish line. I also want to recognize every volunteer, family member, coach, and supporter who helped make the day possible. You showed me exactly what the endurance community is made of.
