This session from the 3rd European Carbon Farming Summit (ECFS26), held in Padova, Italy from 17–19 March 2026, explores how Earth Observation (EO) and data-driven tools are advancing monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems for carbon farming under the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF).
The session combines keynote presentations from leading organisations with a forward-looking panel discussion on the role of EO technologies in scaling credible carbon farming across Europe.
🔹 Session focus
The session begins with keynote contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA), Climate Analytics Finland, and Airbus Space Digital, followed by a panel discussion on the evolving MRV landscape and the role of EO in supporting carbon markets and policy frameworks.
🔹 Key themes
EO-based applications for carbon markets and EU climate policy (ESA)
Integration of research infrastructures, satellite data and modelling tools for MRV (Climate Analytics Finland)
High-resolution satellite monitoring for agricultural features such as hedgerows (Airbus Space Digital)
Demand for consistent, spatially explicit data on carbon stock changes and removals
EO-based MRV approaches across key ecosystems: peatlands, agricultural soils and agroforestry
Translating research innovations into operational MRV systems
Assessing co-benefits and trade-offs of carbon farming practices
Future EO data streams and research priorities for MRV development
Contributors:
Neha Hunka
Tuukka Petäjä (Climate Analytics Finland & University of Helsinki)
Lauri Jyllilä (Maanvaalija)
Marie Christine Delucq (Airbus Space Digital)
Joanne Nightingale (National Physical Laboratory)
Saheba Bhatnagar (BeZero Carbon)
The session highlights how Earth Observation technologies can strengthen the accuracy, scalability and credibility of MRV systems, supporting the development of robust carbon farming frameworks across Europe.
The 3rd European Carbon Farming Summit brought together farmers, policymakers, researchers and businesses to advance credible, scalable and impactful carbon farming across Europe.
