In 1920, Cairo, Illinois had 15,203 people and was once predicted to outgrow St. Louis. Today about 1,700 people live there, and the typical home is worth around $28,000. This is the full story of how a city at the meeting of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers went from "future capital" to one of the cheapest places to buy a house in America.
We follow Cairo from a London bond crash and Charles Dickens' mockery, through Ulysses S. Grant's Civil War headquarters and the millionaire mansions, to the bridges that made it obsolete, the 1967–1973 boycott that emptied downtown, the night in 2011 the Army blew up a levee to save it, and the real numbers for buying a home there today: price, a 5.81% property tax rate and what is left of a Social Security check.
