It can therefore be considered a kind of film-testament. From this point of view, the music composed by Zbigniew Preisner takes on the character of a grand finale, matching the filmmaker's vision in which misanthropy and humanism come face to face. With its Ravelian overtones, the original soundtrack of Red is regarded as one of Preisner's major works, combining an inexorable pulse of anxiety with the lyricism of love and a touch of hope brought by the choir, especially in the Finale. Red is also notable for the important role played by sound design. The voices of Jean-Louis Trintignant and Irène Jacob, together with the ocean of telephone conversations, become part of the film's wider soundscape. Solitude is the leitmotif of Kieslowski's final film, and Preisner's subtle score inhabits that solitude with remarkable intensity. For all these reasons, the music of Red represents an important culmination in Zbigniew Preisner's career and contributed to his subsequent international recognition as a distinguished film composer.
