It traces the early political and theological rifts within Christianity—culminating in the Great Schism of 1054—alongside the rapid spread of Islam and its internal Sunni-Shia split. When the Seljuk Turks expanded into Anatolia and threatened Constantinople, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I turned to Pope Urban II for help, prompting Urban to rally Western Europe in 1095 by offering the absolution of sins for launching a holy war. The video contrasts the disastrous "People's Crusade"—an undisciplined mob led by Peter the Hermit that was swiftly wiped out by Turkish forces—with the primary noble-led Crusader armies as they forged uneasy alliances with Alexios, reclaimed the city of Nicaea, and pressed onward toward Antioch. Mr. Terry makes a cameo and shares his thoughts!
