Word Study Level J, Lesson 5 - Vowel team "ea" (seal)

In this video, I use a Breaking Words activity to teach students to break a big word into the onset, rime, and the inflectional ending. This activity helps students to develop an understanding of word parts, which is crucial in decoding unfamiliar words and in spelling. This is a great lesson for 1st - 4th grade elementary students learning to read and spell, as well as for older ESL learners. This lesson can be used for whole class instruction, small groups, and even be posted to Google Classroom as a reading workshop activity for independent students. It's also great for homeschooling families. A quick reference to leveling: Levels A - D: Kindergarten Levels C - I: First Grade Levels J - M: Second Grade Levels N - P: Third Grade Levels Q - R: Fourth Grade Levels S - U: Fifth Grade Levels V - Y: Sixth Grade Level Z: Seventh Grade Note: Be aware that these are developmental reading/spelling stages, so each child progress through the levels at different rates. Especially at early grades, it is natural to see overlap or discrepancy of developmental vs. chronological age. For English learners, it also depends on language acquisition.
