History: The increasing demand for jute from Dhaka and Mymensingh, the main jute-changing areas of the world, required an improved communication system to supply jute to the Kolkata port. In 1885, a 144 km long meter gauge railway line was laid from Mymensingh to Naranganj to bring the real Dhaka metropolis to Kolkata via the river route.
