These were among my favorite songs of 1984, counted down from 100 to 1.
1984 continued the new era for top 40 music spurred on by MTV. One big difference in this year as opposed to 1983, is that music, in a sense, turned back a bit towards the mainstream in '84; some of the "new wave"/"2nd British invasion" artists receded a bit, as a mild backlash took over and artists like Prince and Madonna pretty much took over.
Also emerging were two genres: Freestyle dance music and heavy metal. By this time, disco pretty much was a thing of the past, but freestyle, with artists like Shannon and Madonna emerged, a form that would be prevalent the rest of the 80's. And while heavy metal had been around for much of the previous decade, it had taken somewhat of a backset in recent year; 1984 was the tip of the iceberg that would become "glam metal".
As for my tastes which dictate this video, while I was still attuned to Top 40 (or "CHR" as it was called during this time), I ventured more into album rock stations, thus artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble made the list. Several others charted only on Billboard mainstream rocks chart.
This video is based on a list that I created at the end of 1984, thus it reflects what I was listening to at the time. Again, some big hits were omitted, and my #1 song of the year barely made the Billboard top 40 (although it should have, in my opinion, gone much higher).
For each of these songs, the title and artist is shown, as well as its peak chart position. Most of these would be the Billboard Hot 100. One of the songs hit only Canada's RPM Single chart, a few "Bubbled Under" Billboard's, several charted on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart (mostly because it wasn't released as a single), two of them didn't chart anywhere (but definitely should have).
