Why did Breath of the Wild replace traditional Zelda dungeons with 120 Shrines?
I've been playing Zelda games for most of my life, and dungeons have always felt like part of Zelda's identity. You find the dungeon, get lost, solve puzzles, discover something new, and eventually fight your way to the end.
Breath of the Wild completely changed that formula.
After spending more time exploring Hyrule, solving Shrine Quests, getting completely confused by Kass, fighting Guardians, and discovering places like the North Lomei Labyrinth, I'm starting to understand what Nintendo was trying to do.
Sometimes the Shrine isn't the puzzle.
Hyrule is.
In this video, I look at my love-hate relationship with Shrines, why Nintendo moved away from traditional Zelda dungeons, what Breath of the Wild gained from that decision, what it lost, and why I think the dungeon may have been hiding in front of me the entire time.
