Finland’s 1941 Offensive – EASTWARD | Operation Barbarossa & The Continuation War

EASTWARD tells the story of Finland’s 1941 offensive during the opening months of the Continuation War. The story begins in June 1941 as Germany launches Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union and war spreads across the northern front. German forces operate from northern Finland toward the Arctic, while the Finnish Army begins its own offensive in Karelia. From the forests around Lake Ladoga to Vyborg, the old 1939 frontier, the Svir River, Petrozavodsk and finally Medvezhyegorsk and Povenets, the song follows the Finnish advance from the summer heat into the freezing winter of December 1941. By the end of the year, nearly five months of offensive operations had come to an end. The advance stopped. The war did not. What followed was more than two years of positional warfare before the Soviet offensive of 1944 transformed the front once again.
