Chopstick Rules in Japan All Trace Back to the Same Place : A Funeral

Chopstick rules in Japan are famously long and confusing, but the two that make people flinch instantly, standing chopsticks upright in rice and passing food chopstick to chopstick, both come from the same place: a Japanese funeral. This video looks at why. Tate-bashi echoes makura-meshi, a bowl of rice with chopsticks stood upright by a body's pillow at a Buddhist funeral. Hashi-watashi echoes kotsuage, the ritual of passing cremated bone fragments chopstick to chopstick, and a wordplay between hashi (chopsticks) and hashi (bridge) that connects it to the river souls are said to cross into the afterlife. Everything else on the long list of Japanese chopstick etiquette, from stabbing food to hovering over shared dishes, is just sloppy manners by comparison. A Japanese person explains exactly how strong that reaction is, and which of the "rules" he still breaks himself. This is part of a series called Before You Go to Japan, about the small unwritten rules that never get explained out loud.
