Welcome to Free Play Friday. Where I find an arcade game I'm interested in and play thru it.
Today we have, Street Fighter EX
Street Fighter, is a world-wide IP that had an atomic boom when Street Fighter 2 hit arcades in 1991. Street fighter originally came out in 1987, and was considered by most to be an awful game which high difficulty. But at the core of it, was a game that was high damage high reward and once you unlock the secret of how to perform special moves, it opened the game up a bit that makes it more palatable. We may play that on the channel just because. But when Street Fighter 2 came out, the whole world was trying to stay on the game as soon as possible, which lead to many knockoffs, and copy-cats. To answer back, Capcom updated the game with Champion edition, which allowed for the Boss characters to be playable and mirror matches. Turbo, which added speed and more moves to most of the cast. Super Street fighter 2, which added 4 characters, various color palettes but reduced the speed. Then Super turbo, a game that is still played today - added the speed back, added more moves and a super meter for whole playable cast. They added a mysterious character Akuma or Gouki in Japan, his intent was unknown at the time and seemed like a rumor on how to fight him. Spoiler: it was getting to the final fight with M. Bison (dictator) without continuing.
In 1996, Capcom Partnered with another company Arika to create Street Fighter EX, I remember seeing this game is various pizza places local to the area I grew up in. While it did not have the same flash as the original 2D Street Fighter II / Street Fighter Alpha games - it still had a unique take on the genre, that gradually got better with its revisions and sequels. We may venture into those arcade games, as a revision to EX, EX Plus, was a thing, along with a sequel and its revision, EX 2 and EX 2 plus, respectively. Adding characters and further building up the back story of the Arika original characters interacting with the Capcom Street Fighter Characters.
This game had various amounts of success and ports. Originally coming out on the PlayStation one, EX 2 also coming out for the PlayStation one as well. There was a straight to console version of the game, EX 3, that came out for the PlayStation 2. While nothing commercial earth shattering, it was during the brave days of capcom where they felt like they were invincible and everything had a place in their hierarchy of development.
