How Fast is TTC Line 5 Eglinton 6 Months Later? (Full Ride | No Cuts)

On February 8, 2026, TTC Line 5 officially opened to the public. Before opening, passengers were promised an end-to-end travel time of approximately 52 to 54 minutes. Construction on the line originally began in 2011, meaning the project took nearly 15 years to reach completion. During that time, other major transit projects across Canada progressed and opened, including Line 6, which opened just two months later. Line 6’s opening was met with significant criticism. The line initially operated without signal priority, resulting in longer-than-expected travel times, while weather-related technical issues, including problems with track switches, further affected service. These issues understandably dampened expectations for another light-rail opening in Toronto, raising concerns that Line 5 could face similar problems, including slower speeds and technical difficulties. Public sentiment toward Line 5 was already mixed before it opened. The project had experienced a six-year delay, bringing the total construction period to nearly 15 years, one of the longest timelines for a major transit project in Canadian history. Despite these concerns, Line 5 received mostly positive reviews when it finally opened. The tunneled portions provided an experience that felt much more like a traditional subway, while trains on the surface section generally performed somewhat better than those on Line 6, even though signal priority had not yet been implemented. On opening day, the full end-to-end journey took roughly an hour. Since the openings of both lines, numerous improvements have been introduced. These include the implementation of signal priority and increased speeds in the tunneled sections of Line 5. There are still areas that could be improved, particularly the poor and static-filled train speakers, as well as the possibility of eventually introducing three-car trainsets to increase capacity.
