Extinction Stops Here: Saving the World's Most Threatened Hummingbirds | ABC Webinar

The Glow-throated Hummingbird is a rare and beautiful hummingbird that inhabits one of the most important conservation areas in Panama: the mountain range of the Azuero Peninsula. This Endangered hummingbird can find refuge in Cerro Hoya National Park, a protected area safeguarding over 74,000 acres of habitat, but the forests surrounding this haven are rapidly disappearing. There are 55 threatened species in Latin America — including the Glow-throated Hummingbird — that fall into the gap between the habitat they need to survive and the habitat that's already protected. Along with parakeets, tanagers, cotingas, and sparrows, several other range-restricted hummingbirds fall short of their habitat protection needs, including the Short-crested Coquette in Mexico, Blue-throated Hillstar in Ecuador, Gray-bellied Comet in Peru, and Chilean Woodstar in Chile. We can fill these conservation gaps and prevent extinctions by protecting a small, strategically selected amount of land. In fact, less than 0.1 percent of the overall Latin American landscape would need to be conserved to achieve the necessary conservation targets to prevent the extinction of 55 bird species. Working with our partners, American Bird Conservancy is protecting and improving habitat to secure a future for these birds in need — including in Panama, where ABC is collaborating with Panama Wildlife Conservation to increase vital habitat for the Glow-throated Hummingbird.
