September 1, 2026. Before liftbacks, hatchbacks, minivans, and SUVs, there was the station wagon. Five of them hit the Short Form Drag Strip today from the Matchbox MBX Wagons set. All five ran. No DQs. No drama. Just consistent, clean laps from a set of cars that looked like they meant business rolling across the table. I expected them to be a bit faster given how smoothly they rolled. The ramp had a different opinion. What they gave instead was consistency -- and in this lab, consistency is its own kind of performance. The 1971 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser led the group at 1.8467 seconds -- Plastic #16 overall. Solid light blue with wood paneling, a roof rack, clear windows with a tan interior, and two dogs looking out the back window. That car was built for a road trip and it ran like it. The spread was 0.066 seconds across ten laps. The 1959 Chevrolet Wagon came in second among the five at 1.8862 seconds -- Plastic #30. Purple with a Wild West Tours livery and luggage on the rack. Not what you'd expect on a drag strip. The ramp does not care about the theme. The 1964 Ford Fairlane followed at 1.9060 seconds -- Plastic #37 -- in metallic silver with no markings. The 2004 Audi RS 6 Avant came in at 1.9095 seconds -- Plastic #39. And the 2010 Cadillac CTS Wagon finished at 1.9140 seconds -- Plastic #40 -- with the tightest spread of the five at just 0.027 seconds. Ten laps that were virtually identical. Neither Short Form Top 10 changed today. These five need the Quarter Mile before composite eligibility. Matchbox now has seven cars in The Lab. Consistent brand. Consistent cars. The wagons delivered exactly what the table roll suggested -- just not quite as fast as hoped.
