The legend says five strangers walked into a desperate village with two hundred raiders on the way.
They could have kept walking.
Instead, they stayed.
The battle was won, but the five heroes remained in the village for a few days to help rebuild what had been destroyed.
One evening, they gathered in the tavern.
The bard had a surprise for them.
A song.
A song about the battle.
A song about their heroic deeds.
And perhaps... a few details that may have been slightly embellished.
Five Heroes is a fantasy tavern ballad telling the bard's larger-than-life version of how an adventuring party trained ordinary farmers, built defenses, prepared traps, and stood beside the villagers when two hundred raiders came to destroy their home.
How much of the song is true?
Well...
You'd have to ask the five heroes.
Lyrics:
Our village had no men at arms,
No gold, no walls, no name.
And in one month, two hundred blades
Will burn our homes and glades.
Five strangers came along our road,
And stopped to hear our cry.
We gave them bread, we gave them grain—
They said, “Your village will not die.”
Heroes! Heroes!
Raise your voices high!
The Five who chose to stand with us—
The Five won't let us die!
They taught us how to hold the spear,
To loose the bow and brace.
They showed us traps and where to stand,
And make a fortress of this place.
At dawn two hundred raiders came,
And crashed against our lines.
The arrows flew, the holy fire burned,
And lightning split the sky.
Our walls held fast, our traps sprang shut,
The first ranks fell like rain.
But enemy magic broke our wards,
And still they came again.
The elf stood high and drew his bow,
Not once his arrow flew too low.
Green death came rainin’ where he led,
And seein’ him, our courage spread.
The soldier spoke no saintly word,
Just vengeance guided his sword.
He carved through raiders, dozens fell,
Till red ran bright along his steel.
The gentle woman bore a light
That healed the deepest scar.
She could mend a broken heart
Or burn enemies from afar.
The young wise man raised up his hand,
And fire split the air.
Flames came roaring from his grasp—
Two hundred raiders learned despair.
The halfling slipped where none could see,
With smiling eyes, the face of death.
She found their chief behind the line,
And grinned as he drew his last breath.
Then twenty farmers took their spears,
And stood beside the five.
The frightened found the strength to fight,
And fought to stay alive.
Step by step the heroes fought.
Step by step withdrew.
And then the halfling girl was grinning...
For the trap was closing soon.
The raiders flooded the gate.
They poured into the square.
Two hundred blades against us.
Two hundred fooled men...
The palisades came crashing down,
The streets became their cage.
The raiders came like wolves to hunt,
But found themselves the prey.
Heroes! Heroes!
Raise your voices high!
Two hundred came with fire and steel—
But we refused to die!
Heroes! Heroes!
The Five who chose to stand!
Twenty hearts behind five souls,
Protectors of this land!
The five heroes asked for nothing,
No treasure, gold, or fame.
They took their wounds, they took their packs,
And quietly walked away.
Heroes... Heroes...
The Five who chose to stand.
When death came knocking at our door,
They met it blade in hand.
