Lights at Sea: Quiet Mysteries to Fall Asleep To

Tonight I open the folder for the first time. Twelve lights at sea that somebody wrote down and nobody has finished explaining. A steamer in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in 1908 that altered course for a light which kept its distance. The marsh lights of the Northumberland shore, and a curate in 1846 who was careful to say he had no theory. The very short notes that lighthouse keepers made between the barometer readings. A glowing sea that sailors were laughed at for two centuries, until a satellite photographed it. And one file that a government department actually investigated, properly, and closed unresolved. For each one I tell you what was really written down, and then which parts of the popular version cannot be traced to anything at all. Twice tonight the answer turns out to be dull, and I give you that too. Nothing here is frightening, and nothing builds on anything else.
