DIRECT EXAMINATION – PART 1
Eric Barnes is a Dallas Police homicide detective and ATF Violent Crime Task Force Officer with experience investigating organized crime, gang activity, and murder-for-hire cases.
Discusses his military background, coded language, investigative experience, and how multiple people can have different roles in an alleged criminal operation.
State's Ex. 1000: Barnes' CV. Defense objected to descriptions of unrelated cases and portions discussing this case. The judge declined to admit the CV for all purposes; it was admitted for record purposes only.
Barnes was already familiar with MO3, Yella Beezy, and Trapboy Freddy before November 2020 through previous investigations involving an ongoing feud.
Detective Chris Brannon was originally assigned MO3's homicide. Barnes became involved because of his prior knowledge of MO3 and related investigations.
November 11, 2020: Barnes volunteered to go to the hospital while other detectives responded to the I-35 shooting scene.
Arrived around 12:30–12:40 p.m., visually confirmed MO3's identity, and learned he had died.
Asked hospital staff to delay notifying others of MO3's death to give investigators time to prepare for possible retaliation.
Encountered MO3's security/bodyguard, Shawn Griffin, at the hospital.
Griffin was driving a dark Camaro, similar to the initial suspect vehicle description. Barnes interviewed him and ruled him out as a suspect.
Barnes discusses investigating MO3's final hours, associations, and possible motives.
Spoke with Jocylynn Jackson and her family on the evening of November 11. Several prosecution questions about information obtained during those interviews drew hearsay objections.
Devin Brown, also known as Chicago, became an early suspect. Barnes obtained phone numbers and began reviewing criminal history, social media, and other investigative leads.
State's Ex. 997: Cell phone numbers associated with Devin Brown, Jocylynn Jackson, and MO3. Investigators obtained phone records for later FBI analysis.
Investigators reviewed MO3's whereabouts before the murder, including his return from California on November 10 and locations he visited afterward.
Barnes describes working a parallel investigation alongside the originally assigned homicide detective, using his previous knowledge of the individuals involved.
Examination ends as the prosecution begins asking about surveillance footage obtained during the investigation.
TO BE CONTINUED – THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5
Barnes remains on direct examination. No cross yet.
