c If you've ever cried and had your dog come sit next to you, you've probably wondered whether pets can sense human emotions or if it's just coincidence. In this video, we dig into the science of animal empathy and animal emotional intelligence to find out how much your pet really understands about your feelings.
Can dogs sense sadness? Research says yes. Dogs read human facial expressions and tone of voice, and in one well-known experiment, dogs went to comfort crying owners, and even crying strangers, far more often than people who were just talking or humming. So how do dogs know when you're upset? Is it real empathy, or emotional contagion in animals, where they simply "catch" your mood?
And what about cats? Do cats know when you're sad? Studies show cats do notice their owner's emotional cues, they just respond on their own terms, which is very on brand. We also look at horses, which can tell happy and angry human faces apart, and ask the big question: do animals feel empathy the way we do, or is it smart survival behavior built over thousands of years of living with humans?
Along the way we touch on pets and mental health, why an animal's presence can make a bad day feel lighter, and what the science of pet behavior actually proves versus what we just want to believe.
Has your pet ever comforted you on a bad day? Tell us in the comments.
