Protecting Pollinators through Innovative Solutions

A one-degree rise may seem small to us, but for bees, it can change how they regulate their hives, survive extreme temperatures, and produce. 🐝 To understand how bees are adapting to climate change, LRI established a beekeeping demonstration plot in Ramliyeh. The study compared three beehive models using traditional softwood, fir (Abies), and paulownia, a fast-growing, lightweight wood with low thermal conductivity. By monitoring temperatures inside the hives, the study explored whether thicker, lighter structures could better protect bees from extreme summer heat and freezing winter temperatures. The first four months showed promising results for paulownia as a potential alternative. In Maasser El Chouf, another demonstration plot is exploring how birds and bats are adapting to environmental changes. Camera-equipped nesting boxes record their activity, turning the site into a living biodiversity experiment. Climate change is already reshaping our ecosystems. Through research and field testing, we can develop practical solutions for farmers and beekeepers while protecting the pollinators and wildlife upon which agriculture depends.
