He fought out his contract, was never offered a new one, and became one of the biggest stories of the week, with Dana White telling reporters at UFC Edmonton that "there's definitely a reason." Chael Sonnen has studied this sport every single day of his life, has missed exactly one UFC card ever, and had never heard of Basharat until the release. And Chael says that is not his fault. It is somebody's fault. Historically, one thing kept a fighter safe no matter what: winning. You could be a complete jerk and winning protected you. Basharat and Muhammad Mokaev may be the only two fighters in history to fight out their contracts undefeated and not be re-signed, and it nearly happened to Colby Covington too. So where did it break down? Chael reads Basharat's statement and spots the tell in one word, "whom," a word no fighter writes, which means management wrote it, the same management that has other fighters to protect and a UFC relationship to maintain. Chael is not kicking a man while he is down. He is offering to help: meet him in Las Vegas this weekend, come to Real American Freestyle, and get in front of people. But if winning no longer protects you, the sport has a new culture, and everybody in it needs to hear that.
