America's traditional buyers are dramatically reducing their purchases of US government bonds, while hedge funds are becoming increasingly important in the Treasury market. Could this trigger a financial crisis?
New figures reveal that countries closely aligned with the United States have slashed their net purchases of longer-term US Treasury bonds by more than 60% during the first eight months of 2026.
The figures for Japan are particularly extraordinary. The world's largest foreign holder of US government debt has reduced its net purchases by an astonishing 99%, while South Korea has become a net seller of approximately $23.8 billion and Taiwan has also recorded net sales.
With America's national debt exceeding $40 trillion, this raises a crucial question: Who is going to buy all the US government bonds Washington needs to issue?
But there's another potentially dangerous development.
Hedge funds have become increasingly significant participants in the US Treasury market, often using highly leveraged trading strategies rather than simply buying bonds and holding them to maturity.
Federal Reserve research has highlighted approximately $830 billion associated with Treasury cash-futures basis trades in September 2025, demonstrating the enormous scale of leveraged activity in the market.
If bond prices move sharply, hedge funds may be forced to unwind positions, potentially triggering further selling, falling bond prices and rising Treasury yields.
The danger isn't necessarily that America runs out of buyers. It's that some increasingly important buyers could be forced to sell their bonds when markets come under pressure.
