Think 80s Jazz Was All Smooth & Electric? 5 Albums to Prove You Wrong

The 1980s often gets a bit of a bad rap when it comes to jazz. For many jazz fans, the decade is associated with a more polished, commercial and electric sound, and as a result, it's easy to overlook the excellent acoustic jazz that was still being made during this period. So, in this video, I'm taking a look at 5 jazz albums from the 1980s that I think deserve more attention. From Freddie Hubbard's powerful trumpet playing on Sweet Return, to the adventurous music of George Adams and Don Pullen, Branford Marsalis' swinging Royal Garden Blues, David Murray's fascinating Ming, and the beautiful piano playing of John Hicks on Some Other Time, these albums demonstrate that there was still plenty of great acoustic jazz being recorded during the decade. These aren't necessarily the five greatest jazz albums of the 1980s, but they're five records that I think make a pretty good case for taking another look at the decade - particularly if you tend to favour straight-ahead and acoustic jazz.
