“Drug Bust After Drug Bust!” Felix Questions Mahama Over Ghana’s Porous Borders

In today’s edition of Sounds From Afar, Felix Appiah turns his attention once again to Ghana’s growing narcotics problem and argues that weak border security is allowing the country to be used as a transit route for illicit drugs. His comments come amid a series of recent narcotics cases linked to Ghana. In one of the latest incidents, police intercepted an articulated truck in the Oti Region carrying 5,164 parcels of suspected narcotic substances, while separate investigations are ongoing into the alleged export of about four tonnes of cocaine from Ghana to France. Felix places political responsibility on President John Mahama and argues that the administration has failed to secure Ghana’s land borders, ports and airports adequately. He questions why major narcotics cases continue to emerge and warns about the potential damage to Ghana’s international reputation. Government, however, says it is responding to the problem. President Mahama recently chaired a meeting of security chiefs and ordered an inter-agency task force to produce a roadmap within two weeks for strengthening border security and preventing narcotics trafficking. Ten people, including four Customs officers, were reportedly being held as investigations continued. Ghana’s Interior Minister has also acknowledged that the country has numerous unofficial crossing points, including 102 illegal routes in the Volta Region alone, and says government is moving toward more intelligence-led border monitoring.
