The ENTIRE History of Turkey in 22 Minutes On the night of October twenty-eighth into October twenty-ninth, nineteen twenty-three, a telegraph message left a small city in the Anatolian interior and reached every corner of the world. It announced that a republic had been declared on the ruins of a six-century empire, using the same hills, the same rivers, the same narrow strait between two continents that human beings had been fighting over for more than ten thousand years. That should not be possible. A land absorbed by the Hittites, the Persians, Alexander of Macedon, Rome, Byzantium, the Seljuks, the Mongols, and the Ottomans should have no distinct identity left. It should be a geological fact, not a civilization. And yet every one of those empires rose here, ruled here, and left something of themselves behind when they were gone. How does a piece of land repeatedly become the center of the world's largest empires without ever being simply consumed by them? What hidden logic made Persian kings, Roman emperors, and Ottoman sultans all choose this exact territory as the place to build their throne? And why does the English-speaking world call this ancient land by the same name as a bird from the Americas, a bird that has never once lived here? The answer to all three questions turns out to be the same. Anatolia is not a passive prize. It is a hinge, and whoever seizes a hinge discovers very quickly that a door swings both ways. The proof of that starts not with any empire, but with a bare hilltop and a set of stones that rewrote everything historians thought they knew about the beginning of human civilization.
