A long walk north-east from Nezu, through the part of Tokyo that the war mostly missed. Nothing here is a sight. A pharmacy, a noticeboard, a bus stop, a sign on a wall giving the old name of the neighbourhood from before the addresses were renumbered. A ramen shop not yet open. Wooden houses with tiled roofs between the apartment blocks. Past Dangozaka, the slope where the novelists of a century ago used to live, the streets get older and quieter. Temple walls, then an avenue of enormous cherry trees with the road running straight underneath - one of the oldest tree-lined streets in the city, and almost empty on a weekday. And at the end, tempura udon.
