Have you ever looked into the night sky, surrounded by countless stars, and wondered why the Creator of such an extraordinary universe would care about you?
"Who Are You?" begins with one of humanity's oldest questions: "Who am I that You would think of me?"
But as the song unfolds, something beautiful happens.
Our questions about ourselves begin to give way to a greater wonder—not who we are, but who God is.
Why would the Creator of the universe desire our friendship? Why would He welcome us despite our failures? Why would He love us enough to send His Son to redeem us?
Inspired by Psalm 8, this intimate worship song journeys from the vastness of creation to the tenderness of a Father's love.
And ultimately, the questions give way to something more beautiful than answers.
Relationship.
The freedom to rest in the presence of the One who made us, knows us, loves us, and calls us His children.
May this song invite you to look beyond the questions of life and discover the wonder of knowing your Heavenly Father.
Scripture inspiration:
Psalm 8:3–4 | Psalm 139:1–18 | Genesis 1:26–27 | John 3:16 | Romans 8:15–16 | 1 John 3:1
When I look up and see the heavens,
Filled with stars I cannot count,
When I look out across this world,
At every hill and sea and mount,
When I look down beneath the waters,
At worlds no human eye can see,
I whisper underneath the wonder,
"Who am I that You see me?"
So small beneath a sky so endless,
A breath within eternity—
Who am I in all You've fashioned?
How can You take thought of me?
Verse 2
And what did You make my heart for?
Why this longing deep inside?
Why can all the world surround me,
Yet never leave me satisfied?
What is this ache that keeps me searching,
Past everything my eyes can see?
Could it be the heart You gave me
Was always meant to rest in Thee?
Pre-Chorus
I came with all my questions,
Thinking answers were what I need,
But every road of wonder
Keeps leading back to Thee.
Chorus
Who am I that You would know me?
Who am I that You would care?
Who am I that when I call You,
I discover You are there?
Who am I that You would make me
In a likeness drawn from You?
The more I ask, the more I wonder—
Father, who am I to You?
Verse 3
And why would You desire my friendship?
Why would You invite me near?
Why would Heaven's King call softly
To a heart so prone to fear?
Why would You love me past my failures,
Past the things You always knew?
Why would love stretch out its arms
And let them nail Your Son there too?
Why would He bear my shame and sorrow?
Why would mercy choose that tree?
Why would the One through whom You made me
Give His very life for me?
Emotional Turn
Then somewhere in the asking,
A different question starts to rise.
I have stared so long upon myself—
Now lift my heart and lift my eyes.
Perhaps I've asked the question backward,
Standing here beneath this view.
The wonder isn't really, "Who am I?"
The wonder is—
"Father... who are You?"
Bridge
Who are You that You would know me
Before I ever knew Your name?
Who are You that You would want me
Though You need nothing I could bring?
Who are You whose heart is Father?
Who are You whose Son is Love?
Who are You who crossed the distance
Between my little world and Yours above?
You made me so that I could know You.
You loved me long before I knew.
And every question I've been asking
Has only led my heart to You.
Final Chorus
So I don't need to know why You chose me.
I don't need to understand.
I have found enough of Heaven
Just to know You hold my hand.
I don't need to solve the mystery
Of why Your heart would welcome mine.
If You have called me Your beloved,
Father, that is answer enough for all of time.
Outro
But Father...
I didn't come for answers.
That's not why I'm here tonight.
I came to see the beauty
Of the smile behind the light.
I came to feel the comfort
Of the strength that carries me.
I came to linger in Your love
And simply let my spirit be.
No more who,
No more what,
No more why I need to know.
I only want to be here,
And never hurry when I go.
Let me rest here in Your presence,
Where every restless question's done.
Let me love You, precious Father,
Let me adore Your precious Son.
And if You never answer
Another question that I bring...
You are my Father.
I am Your child.
And You are my everything.
