It's a late November evening and the first snow of the season is falling over the thatched roofs and the old stone church tower. A lamplit carriage rolls slowly down the snowy lane, and the lamplighter climbs his ladder to light the gas lamps one by one along the high street. Mince pies and gingerbread glow in the bakery window, oranges and holly fill the grocer's shop, and a great fire burns in the taproom of the village inn. A woman in a burgundy wool cloak crosses the little stone bridge and opens the gate of her candlelit cottage, a tabby cat watches the snow from the window sill, and sparks fly at the village forge. A gentleman in a dark green greatcoat stops to admire the painted Christmas cards in the stationer's window, the parish church glows with candles, and the lanterns shine at the gates of Hollyhurst Manor on the hill. Late at night, fresh snow covers the footprints on the high street and the whole village glows softly under the falling snow. 🎻 THE MUSIC A gentle chamber arrangement of traditional English Christmas carols — Deck the Halls, The Holly and the Ivy, I Saw Three Ships, O Christmas Tree, Here We Come A-Wassailing and the Gloucestershire Wassail — played slowly and warmly on parlour piano, soft string quartet, concert harp, wooden flute and clarinet. Calm, cheerful instrumental Victorian Christmas music with no vocals and no bells. ❄️ PERFECT FOR Relaxing by the fire on a winter evening Reading, studying and quiet work Baking, decorating and Christmas preparations Sleep and calm winter nights ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 First Snow Over Hollyhurst 15:00 The Lamplighter on the High Street 30:00 The Bakery and the Grocer's Window 45:00 Firelight at the Village Inn 1:00:00 The Village Green and the Frozen Pond 1:15:00 Across the Stone Bridge 1:30:00 A Candlelit Cottage 1:45:00 Sparks at the Village Forge 2:00:00 The Parish Church and the Manor 2:15:00 Hollyhurst at Night This is Chapter 1 of A Christmas in Hollyhurst.
