WHERE I CANNOT GO — TheSixFoldMercy
“When my hands must let him go, may Your hands be holding on.”
What do you pray when someone you love must walk a road you cannot follow?
Inspired by David and Jonathan’s farewell (1 Samuel 18–20), “Where I Cannot Go” gives voice to Jonathan’s final prayer for his friend. Unable to change his father Saul’s heart or follow David into danger, he entrusts him to the care of God.
With intimate vocals, expressive cello, delicate violins and tender harmonies, TheSixFoldMercy tells a story of friendship, sacrifice, separation and faith.
For everyone who has ever had to let someone go — and prayed that God would stay beside them.
📖 Biblical inspiration: 1 Samuel 18:1–4; 20:1–42.
LYRICS
[Intro]
Lord...
I can't go with him.
So go where I cannot go.
[Verse 1]
The morning found us in the field
Three arrows crossed the quiet sky
He understood before I spoke
Why I could hardly meet his eyes
I was the son of a king
He was the friend I couldn't lose
Between the anger and the sword
There was no safe road left to choose
[Pre-Chorus]
I couldn't change my father's heart
I couldn't make the danger cease
So I gave him what was left
A broken prayer, a little peace
[Chorus]
Go with him, Lord
Where I cannot go
When the dark is all around him
Let him know he's not alone
When my hands must let him go
May Your hands be holding on
Go with him, Lord
Where I cannot go
[Verse 2]
I gave him my own robe and sword
Long before that farewell day
I knew the calling on his life
Though I would never lead his way
We wept until our voices failed
No promise could remove the pain
But in the silence after tears
I knew Your faithfulness remained
[Pre-Chorus]
I could not tell him he'd be safe
I could not make the darkness end
But every promise made in You
Was stronger than the fear we held
[Chorus]
Go with him, Lord
Where I cannot go
When the dark is all around him
Let him know he's not alone
When my hands must let him go
May Your hands be holding on
Go with him, Lord
Where I cannot go
[Instrumental — Cello and Violin]
[Bridge]
I want to keep him safe, Lord
I want just one more day
But I cannot be his shelter
On the roads he has to take
So take this fear inside my chest
And the future I can't see
If You are walking there beside him
Teach my heart to let him leave
[Male Backing Vocal — Eliad]
The Lord between us...
[Female Lead]
Forever...
[Both Voices]
You are here...
[Final Chorus]
Go with him, Lord
Where I cannot go
When the dark is all around him
Let him know he's not alone
When my hands must let him go
May Your hands be holding on
Go with him, Lord
Where I cannot go
[Final Refrain]
When my hands must let him go...
[Male Backing Vocal — Eliad]
Your hands will still hold on...
[Outro]
The Lord between us...
For all our days...
Where I cannot go...
You go.
