If so, click here    • Explore Vienna in 4K - All Videos   On May 20th, 2025 at 10:00 AM, we take a walk along the U1 metro line in Vienna’s 22nd district, Donaustadt, starting at Rennbahnweg and heading north toward Aderklaaer Straße. The weather is warm and pleasant with around 21°C, 70°F, a typical late spring morning. Rennbahnweg station serves a large residential area and is part of Vienna’s extended U1 line, which connects the northern outskirts with the city center. This part of Vienna feels very different from the historic districts, more open, more modern, and shaped by post war urban planning. Soon we reach one of the most impressive housing complexes in the city, the Gemeindebau Rennbahnweg. Built between 1973 and 1977, it is one of the largest municipal housing developments in Vienna, with over 2,400 apartments across 59 buildings, home to around 7,000 to 8,000 residents. Developments like this reflect Vienna’s long tradition of social housing, which is often considered one of the reasons the city remains relatively affordable compared to other European capitals. Inside, large courtyards open up between the buildings, creating space for daily life, playgrounds, and community interaction. Even practical areas like the waste collection zones show how infrastructure is organized for thousands of residents living in one place. In the distance, we can see Citygate and the Leopold Tower, one of the tallest residential buildings in Vienna, offering a strong contrast to the surrounding structures. The nearby Citygate Shopping Center provides everyday services for the neighborhood, showing how these districts are designed to function almost like small self contained towns. As we continue, we cross Wagramer Straße, one of the main traffic arteries in this part of Vienna, connecting the district with the city center and the Danube area. The walk ends as we approach Aderklaaer Straße station, another stop along the U1 line. This route shows a side of Vienna that many visitors never explore, where large scale housing, infrastructure, and daily life come together in a unique way.
