As the oak-wood road grew dark, I came to a ruined priory whose old guesthouse, the only part still lit, now keeps travellers for the night. I warmed my hands at a small fire in the herb garden while the innkeeper turned the pages of the book where travellers write down their roads, and after the rain the roofless church filled with mist until the last firefly went out. Best with the lights low and a book you are in no hurry to finish. 🎵 Tracklist 0:00 Gables Through the Oaks 3:13 The Guesthouse Lancet 6:37 Thyme in the Fire 9:37 The Broken Bell Stair 12:30 The Travellers' Road Book 15:30 The Baptismal Basin 18:37 Mist Through the Nave 21:52 The Last Firefly 📝 About each track 1. Gables Through the Oaks — As the oak-wood road slowly darkened, pointed stone gables showed through the branches ahead. Beside the ruined church of an old priory, its guesthouse still kept lights in its windows, and far to the east, through a gap in the forest, the lamps of a sister house I had never visited hung small on a hilltop. 2. The Guesthouse Lancet — In the guesthouse hall I was given the stone bench beneath a pointed window, and I unrolled my bedroll there and knocked the mud from my boots. The iron hooks by the door were worn smooth by generations of travellers' staffs, and on one of them still hung an old staff left, they said, by a pilgrim bound for the sister house on the eastern hill. 3. Thyme in the Fire — At nightfall the innkeeper lit a small fire of birch twigs in the herb garden behind the guesthouse and toasted dark bread and goat's cheese for us. His daughter threw a handful of thyme onto the flames, the sweet smoke rose over the garden wall, and she told me the plant had first come as a cutting from the sister house on the eastern hill. 4. The Broken Bell Stair — I left the fire and climbed the stone stair that runs up the wall of the broken bell tower, as far as it still goes. Below me fireflies were scattered through the roofless church, and when I looked up the forest rolled away like dark water under the last of the dusk, with two or three lights of the sister house in a row on the hill at its edge, though the road that climbs to them through the trees could not yet be seen from there. 5. The Travellers' Road Book — Later, by the hearth in the hall, the innkeeper turned the great book quietly, leaf by leaf, looking for an entry from years ago. A light shower was passing over the roof when he found it: in a fine careful hand, the road that climbs through the forest to the sister house on the eastern hill. Beneath it, in oak-gall ink, I added the road I had come by. 6. The Baptismal Basin — When the shower had passed, the loudest sound in the roofless church was the drip from the rim of the old eight-sided stone font. The gaps between the drops grew longer and longer, and beyond them the lights on the eastern hill were beginning to slip behind the forest mist. 7. Mist Through the Nave — Mist flowed in from the forest and filled the roofless nave, leaving only the shadows of ivy in the tall pointed windows. The rows of stone pillars drew in the cold of the night, an owl called once somewhere in the woods, and after that I could hear nothing but my own breathing; the lights on the eastern hill were lost beyond the mist. 8. The Last Firefly — In a small room of the guesthouse I crept into bed, and the last firefly resting on the lead of the window glowed slowly twice and then went dark. I decided that tomorrow, guided by the entry in the book, I would try the road through the forest to the eastern hill, and I closed my eyes. #celticmusic #fantasymusic #sleepmusic #睡眠用bgm
