Psalm 23 is six verses that have outlasted every empire. I took it back to the Hebrew — Yahweh as the personal covenant name, tsalmaveth as the narrowest darkest ravine, chesed as the loyal love that doesn't follow you but hunts you down — and let the music carry what no footnote can. Slow pulse, Caribbean warmth, and a table set in the middle of enemy territory.
The Lord — The covenant God, the personal faithful Yahweh — Is my shepherd. And because He is, I shall not lack anything, Not one thing that I truly need.
He causes me to lie down in pastures lovely and pleasant, Places of genuine delight and rest. He leads me beside still waters, Deeply comforting to my soul.
He restores my whole being — My life, my self, my very breath — Turning me back and reviving me completely. He guides me in paths of righteousness For the sake of His own name.
Even when I walk through the narrowest, darkest ravine, Through places so shadowed they feel like death itself, I will not fear what is evil — Because You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, They bring me true comfort.
You spread a feast before me In plain sight of those who oppose me. You do not merely anoint my head with oil — You saturate it, lavishly, richly. My cup is not simply full. It is overflowing, running over, With abundance far beyond what I need.
Surely — Without any doubt — Goodness and covenant lovingkindness, Loyal and steadfast love You have pledged to me, Will not merely follow me But actively pursue me, Hunt me down All the days of my life.
And I will dwell in Your house, In Your very presence, For all the length of my days — And longer still. Forever.
