When your wife files for divorce, it can feel like your entire life is being destroyed. But looking back, I can say something I never would have believed at the time: *her filing for divorce may end up being one of the best things that ever happens to you.* When my marriage was ending, I fought to save it. I tried changing myself, working on myself, talking things through, and going to marriage counseling. But eventually I had to accept a harder truth: if someone is telling you they no longer want the marriage, you can’t force them to feel differently. For me, the bigger lesson was about self-respect. At the time, I didn’t believe I could do better. I didn’t know whether I could make it on my own, and I didn’t feel particularly worthy. Divorce forced me to confront that—and eventually rebuild my confidence, self-esteem, and life without depending on someone else to validate my value. I also talk about the fear divorced fathers often have about losing their relationship with their kids. In my experience, the opposite happened. My relationship with my son became dramatically stronger once I was able to create a calmer home, stop constantly managing another adult’s emotions, and focus more energy on being his dad. Divorce can feel like rejection in the beginning. But with enough distance, it can also become an opportunity to stop fighting for someone who doesn’t want the relationship, rebuild your self-respect, become a better father, and create a life you may eventually realize is much healthier than the one you were desperately trying to save.
