For this interview, Arshan sat down with Gunner Stahl at Shopify’s SoHo space for the second iteration of our ‘KTO Live in New York’ event series, following our last live event with Cole Bennet. This event included a full day of programming, including: networking for creatives, an educational talk from Kids Take Over founder Arshan Jawaid about building and monetizing an independent media company, a listening-to-music session with the audience, and, finally, the live interview with our special guest, the renowned photographer and music video director, Gunner Stahl.
In their conversation, Gunner dives into his career’s journey that began 10 years ago in Atlanta after quitting his job at Dick’s Sporting Goods to pursue photography using a borrowed film camera from his friend. Quickly, Gunner became rap’s go-to photographer after documenting some of 2016’s most iconic images, ranging from Lil Yachty to The Weeknd to Playboi Carti. Since then, Gunner has worked closely with the Opium camp and been trusted with shooting album covers for Carti, Ken Carson, and Destroy Lonely, alongside Metro Boomin’s ‘HEROES & VILLAINS.’ Gunner also talks about what went into the creation of his book ‘Portraits: I Have So Much To Tell You’ and other creative ventures that haven’t yet seen the light of day, like his unreleased album with Aminé & Pi'erre Bourne. To cap off the interview we opened up to the audience to showcase their photography and ask Gunner questions. Watch the full interview to see!
