So You Were Born an Orca

You're born tail first and immediately forget where the air is. You don't sleep for a month. Your grandma runs the family, your mom still cuts your salmon at four tons, and a great white shark named Derek never forgets a face. So you were born an orca. Here's how that goes. 0:00 Three hundred teeth 0:11 Born tail first 0:41 Him 0:53 Grandma's family 1:20 The beach lesson 1:40 Flip it over 1:50 Mama's boy (and the salmon hat) 2:20 What you're working with 2:57 Nobody is born a boss 3:16 Day nine. Calves are usually born tail first, about 2–2.5 m long and up to ~180 kg, with peach-tinted white patches; whales and dolphins breathe voluntarily, so mother and others help a newborn to the surface; mothers and newborn calves show almost no normal sleep for about the first month; resident orca families are matrilineal and often led by old post-reproductive grandmothers who know where the salmon are; each pod has its own vocal dialect; in Patagonia orcas deliberately strand themselves on beaches to grab sea lions, and mothers teach calves the technique; turning a shark upside down can put it into "tonic immobility" — orcas have been seen doing it; in resident populations sons stay with their mothers for life, and mothers share salmon with adult sons; in 1987 Southern Resident orcas were seen wearing dead salmon on their heads for a few weeks (and it was reported again in 2024); adult males reach about 8 m and 6 tons, with a dorsal fin up to ~1.8 m; orcas have around 40–56 interlocking teeth up to ~10 cm long; they echolocate with clicks; the white patch above the eye is not the eye; after orcas appear, great white sharks have been recorded leaving an area for months.
