What if asteroid Apophis had hit Earth? 🌍
In December 2004, astronomers found that a newly rediscovered asteroid had about a 1-in-40 chance of hitting Earth in 2029. This video follows how the scare began, how archived photographs ruled out 2029, what a "gravitational keyhole" is, and how scientists map a risk corridor across the planet. It then looks at the energy a rock about 340 meters wide could release, what the landscape underneath would change, and how Apophis was finally cleared. In April 2029 it will pass closer than our geostationary satellites.

Apophis poses no impact risk for at least the next 100 years, according to NASA and ESA. This video explores a past scenario that was ruled out, using published estimates. Impact effects are uncertain and depend on many factors.
