Hawaii's Hurricane Legacy. How Storms Shaped The North Shore
Hurricanes have battered Hawaii for decades, but the storms that made the North Shore legendary were never hurricanes at all. As Tropical Storm Lala moves past the islands, this video breaks down the difference between the systems that destroy this coastline and the ones that built its reputation.
We start with what's happening right now. Lala passed south of the islands, which sent 10 to 15 foot surf onto Oahu's east-facing shores while the North Shore sat at one to three feet. That's not a coincidence. It's the reason Pipeline's season runs November through February, driven by long-period northwest groundswells from the North Pacific rather than tropical systems approaching from the south.
From there we walk the record. Hurricane Iwa in November 1982, which struck at Thanksgiving and left parts of Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau without power for weeks. Hurricane Iniki in September 1992, the strongest in recorded Hawaii history, which broke the state's insurance market so thoroughly that State Farm still hasn't returned. Then the swells that actually made history: December 1969, and Condition Black in January 1998, when the ocean was too big for the Eddie to run at all.
We close on the slower threat. A 2022 report found 73 percent of North Shore beaches in chronic erosion, with homes already lost at Rocky Point and Sunset Beach.
Stay safe out there, Hawaii.
