This is a simple drum timing exercise for beginner drummers. If you’ve just bought an electronic drum kit, or you’re helping your child practise at home then this video (and this channel!) is for you. In the video I’ll give a clear demo and explanation and there’s plenty of time to practise together as we go. We’ll cover… Basic counting Quarter notes and eighth notes Playing along to a metronome Be patient with the metronome as it can feel a bit unnatural at first. You might notice yourself speeding up or slowing down and that’s completely normal. The aim is to gradually synchronise with the metronome click. You can download a metronome app (I use Pro Metronome, not sponsored!) or simply search “metronome” on Google for a free one. You don’t need a drum kit or sticks to do this exercise. You can tap on a table, a pillow or even just use your hands. The target speed for this exercise is 90bpm. Were you able to follow along with me? Could you use your weaker hand? Both sticks? What about reversing the exercise? Don’t forget the metronome ladder concept by increasing the tempo in small steps (around 5bpm at a time). This avoids big jumps in speed and helps prevent frustration. A big tip is to record yourself practising. It acts like a mirror and pressing that red record button adds just enough pressure to help focus your playing.
