📚 What is Regular Expression? | Theory of Computation
A *Regular Expression (RE)* is a formal way of describing a *Regular Language* using symbols and operators. In Theory of Computation (TOC), Regular Expressions are used to represent sets of strings that can be recognized by **Finite Automata**.
In simple terms, a Regular Expression tells us **what kind of strings belong to a particular language**.
For example:
🔹 `a` → Language containing `a`
🔹 `a+b` → `a` OR `b`
🔹 `ab` → `a` followed by `b`
🔹 `a*` → zero or more occurrences of `a`
🔹 `(a+b)*` → all possible strings over `{a,b}`
The main concepts you should understand are:
✅ Union / OR
✅ Concatenation
✅ Kleene Star (`*`)
✅ Empty String (`ε`)
✅ Regular Languages
✅ Finite Automata
✅ Language represented by a Regular Expression
