Dawn, 480 BC. A scout runs down a mountain pass with news that the Persians are behind you. A Spartan king has to decide who lives and who stays to die.
In this video, we tell the story of the Battle of Thermopylae: Xerxes' invasion of Greece, the narrow pass known as the Hot Gates, the three hundred Spartans chosen because they had living sons, the betrayal of the mountain path, and the final stand.
We also look at what most versions leave out: the Spartans were never alone. Thousands of Greeks held the pass, and seven hundred Thespians chose to stay and die beside them.
Almost everything we know about the battle comes from Herodotus, who wrote decades later. Where details are disputed, or where a story is only tradition, we say so.
